Common Engraving Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

Salisbury, Inc. has been handcrafting pewter and fine metal gifts since 1979, helping our consumers show their love through fine craftsmanship. One of the most meaningful touches comes with engraving the pewter product. Over the years, through guiding our customers, we’ve aimed to help identify common engraving mistakes and find ways to avoid them.

The good news? Most engraving mistakes are easy to avoid with a little guidance. Here are the most common ones, and how to make sure your personalization feels timeless and well considered.

Mistake #1: Saying Too Much in the Engraving

One of the most common engraving mistakes is adding too many words. Pewter pieces — especially baby cups and julep cups — have limited space. Longer messages can look crowded or require smaller lettering, reducing their clarity and elegance.

How to Avoid:

Keep it short and meaningful, like a name and date, a monogram, or a brief phrase like “With Love.”

Mistake #2: Using Trendy Phrases

Slang, inside jokes, or overly trendy wording can feel meaningful today but dated tomorrow. Remember, many engraved gifts are kept for decades. What feels clever now may not age well.

How to Avoid:

Choose wording that feels timeless. Names, dates, and short, heartfelt phrases remain meaningful for years.

Mistake #3: Choosing the Wrong Engraving Font

The engraving font plays a significant role in how the message feels. For example, a highly decorative script on a structured julep cup can feel mismatched, and an overly modern font on a traditional baby cup may lack warmth.

How to Avoid:

Select a font that complements the occasion and the piece. Script fonts feel elegant and sentimental. Serif fonts feel classic and balanced. Block fonts feel clean and understated.

Mistake #4: Forgetting to Double-Check Details

Spelling errors, incorrect dates, or swapped initials are among the most painful engraving mistakes because they can’t be undone. The Salisbury team does its best to review engravings for obvious mistakes, but it’s the customer’s responsibility to enter engraving details correctly.

How to Avoid:

Carefully review spelling, date format, and monogram order (First–Last–Middle for traditional format).
